A 3D character was required to be concepted, modelled, rigged and animated for this TVC. We took this job from conception through to final delivery, through several iterations of the Character, until "Toady" was finally realised.

Until the day he meets Louise and falls hard. Now he's got to enlist the help of her feral brother, Dougie, to outsmart rich kid Martin, bikers, bankers, Goths, fetishists and Australia's richest man, a bigger con-man than Eric himself.

Client: Forgan-Smith Entertainment
Release Date: To be released July 2007
For this project I was required to come up with an engaging intro title sequence and execute it through to completion as well as the end credits. In addition to this I had two SFX shots and had to complete one TVC titled "Extreme Makeover" which was featured in the film. Some of the different elements I worked on are shown in this post.

tasks in this project. Once the basic texture map was painted I used a
combination of techniques to achieve a realistic skin appearance. Because
of its slightly translucent quality I used a sub surface scattering base,
mixed with a custom light angle dependent shader, allowing shadow sections
to be slightly redder. The red helps to simulate the appearance of light
traveling through the skin to illuminate that which is not lit
This is a rough guide to the rigging process. This has been almost as
When areas you plan for at the modeling stage deform beautifully you
get a scary, geeky satisfaction from it. Once everything is set up correctly
and dynamically, simply moving a leg causes the fatty areas of the calf
squash when it collides, or moving will make fatty areas on the body and
the face move realistically. There is a small amount of animation of this
in the showreel, but as a single frame can
This TVC was supposed to lift the profile of the Cairns Post, and attract new readers. This ad was part of the Cairns Posts strategy that allowed them to become Australia's Fastest Growing Newspaper during that year.

It's obviously a fairly heavy composite job, so after I finished the rough cut, I moved on to trying different graphical elements to compliment each member of staff. Paul Smith from Y-Films did a great job of bringing out the staff members personality in his direction, and I really don't think the TVC would have worked if that sincerity was lost.

The Sun revisted their paper's design, and needed to launch the new image with some impact. The commercial successfully took the Queensland Media Awards 2006's Award for "Best Special Effects".

Other awards won included "Best Editing/Production Technique" and I was involved in the campaign which took home the Bob Hale Award: "Best Campaign". I will post these TVCs in the coming days.
This is the Post-Comp/Pre-Comp Comparison shot for Books Alive. We shot it using a green/yellow book with tracking markers. This was because the book he was supposed to be reading wasn't finished being written at the time of shooting. After shooting, I began the laborious task of tracking the shots and attempting to overlay mockup artwork onto the shots (which were later replaced once I had the final artwork).

The book animation is also a vast improvement over the original animatic proof.

This TVC for James Cook University was successful at raising the mid-term enrolments well and truly past the goals. Aside from that, I think it looks quite nice too :)

This is a similar story to the Cairns Post Image TVC. The year that this ran was (by far) the highest enrolment in the University's history. Of course there are many factors that determine these things, but that was the purpose of this TVC - to raise the University's profile and make the other factors more evident to potential students... In that capacity it was extremely successful.
